On Amazon, I like to go to the negative reviews first because I want to determine if there is a consistent quality issue or just a few psychopaths who are so angry, they are doing their best to get their version of justice by placing a negative review. One can usually read between the lines and see the retribution folks. I wasn't sure what to expect of this book since there were a fair amount of consistently negative reviews, and by consistent, I am referring to the image quality...normally this kind of consistency is a flag for me. However, I wanted to buy a Norman Rockwell book to introduce my son to his amazing storytelling capabilities. Additionally, we are talking about art here, not something mechanical and people get emotional about art in a way that is different, and for good reason. If you are looking for a book with image quality so high you can see his brush strokes, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for images where the details are good enough that you can see the menu in the background, the missing button on the sleeve, the untied shoelace, the headline for the newspaper, then this book provides that. It's everything you need to see the story being told. There's a good selection of his art and they are presented by decade. Is it everything I dreamed for $23? No. Is it worth the price, yes, every penny.
After having seen the Norman Rockwell Exhibition in Sacramento and finding the Museum had sold out of its own books of the exhibition, I went straight to Amazon to buy a book of Rockwell's work for our home library. I had listened to the audio tour narrated by Tom Rockwell, so decided it would be fitting to purchase the Rockwell book of illustrations chosen by Tom, Norman's son. The collection is fine, but I found the quality of the reproductions decidedly lacking. If I had not seen the museum exhibition perhaps I would not be so aware of the print quality of the many wonderful illustrations. I would rather have had a book of a dozen of Rockwell's work in fine quality than page after page of illustrations that lack definition of line, and, are, in fact somewhat blurry.
We enjoyed this book as a part of our homeschool study of Norman Rockwell. My kids just enjoy looking at the pictures and imagining what was going on at during that time.
It's nicely done. While not ultra high quality, the painting reproductions are more than adequate. I am enjoying the book and pick it up and peruse it on a regular basis. My wife and I find Rockwell's family paintings (e.g., The Thanksgiving and Army Son home for a visit) very touching. He was a serious artist who has been under rated. Whether the America he portrays ever existed is up for debate but for those moments when I immerse myself in his paintings I assume it did. I recommend it highly. If the reproductions had been a bit higher quality I'd have given it the full five stars.
This is a lovely book. The paper is high quality, and the colors in the prints are vibrant. The book is large, sturdy, and hard cover.
Excellent book by the author's son. Excellent coffee table book to enjoy forever.
Loved Norman Rockwell all through my childhood....enjoying this book so much!
Ive bought a few Rockwell books recently and must say this has the best color reproduction of any I have recieved so far. I must add that different shades of printing reveal different details of the pictures but this one contains my favorite balance. It also includes many works we may not have seen due to the family ties of the author. I only wish it was a bigger collection. Fantastic.I will have to visit the Rockwell museum in Stockbridge sometime.
