Chris is the man when it comes to branch whittling. The book is very well put together with vibrant full color pages that show the pieces close up. The 4 stars is because simply I have watched many videos with Chris and the information from those just doesn't fit into this book. A simple detail like using the big knife and sawing motion along the full length of the blade to make the rooster tail just doesn't transfer as well in text as is does in a video.Great book for anyone getting into whittling or wanting some projects that can be made with whatever wood/trees are around you.And always remember sharp knife!

chris's books are great and his projects are fun. swiss army knives are outstanding! great combination!

Easy to follow instructionsThe book should have a chapter on the very basicâ€™s of whittling and show more easy projects to whittle

This book has lots of pictures that follow along with the written text to give you an idea of what to do as you attempt to whittle projects side-by-side with the book. Written in a conversational style, most people should be able to follow along to learn the basics â€“ then take those skills forward for your own creations. For the beginner, there is a good overview of choosing a knife, sharpening, how to cut wood, etc. You truly can do this with one of the Swiss Army tinker knife.You may also want to do a search on the authorâ€™s name, as he has several instructional â€œhow toâ€ videos that are very similar to the chapters in the book â€“ it can help bridge some of the question of â€œhow did he do thatâ€ as you are doing your own project.

Great book! Lots of color photos! Directions are straight forward. Best of all are the many unique and different items to carve. My favorite section are the many adorable birds! I will have to check out his other books! Thanks

Interesting book for anyone who is interested in simple carving.

My son and I are using this together, I like the safety tips (as my almost teenage son doesn't tend to listen to my expert advise as much anymore) good information about types of wood to carve and knives.

Another great book by Chris. He knows his stuff an is good at estimating time and difficulty levels for carving / whittling his projects.

Interesting idea. David B. Hart attempts to answer the question of where God was during natural disasters such as the Indonesian tsunami in 2004. He is responding mostly to theodicy (the belief that evil and suffering are part of God's divine plan) and Calvinist strains of Christianity (the doctrine of predestination).Hart's response is : â€œThe Christian should see two realities at once, one world (as it were) within another:one the world as we all know it, in all its beauty and terror, grandeur and dreariness, delight and anguish; and the other world in its first and ultimate truth, not simply â€œnatureâ€ but â€œcreation,â€ an endless sea of glory, radiant with the beauty of God in every part, innocent of all violenceâ€ (60).Evil is not a creation of God, but is the privation of goodness (like St. Augustine). Suffering and evil exist because we have free will and we have chosen to sin and thus, let sin into the world. The world was once perfect and pure (Pre Fall), and once we sinned, we have physically altered the world in a way that makes it susceptible to tragedy, misery, and evil. A question we can ask in response is how exactly was the world altered after the Fall? Did the laws of gravity or motion change? Has the genetic makeup of human beings been altered as well?Overall, I thought this approach was interesting, but I believe it be inadequate for a number of reasons.

Other reviews and blurbs have eloquently set out the project of this wonderful book.All I can hope to add is to ask anyone who has ever asked those big questions about suffering and meaning and God's will to read this book ... and hopefully be inspired, hopefully see a glimpse of what the answer may be. It also reminds us most timeously to refrain from the glib and banal platitude when suffering strikes.A short little book that packs the theological punch of a 500 page masterpiece. I will return to this often.

DBH once again brings a masterful work to the post-modern conversation. There is a host of unsatisfying answers to the problem of evil, but this dismantles them and gives a confident and humble answer that does not disappoint or otherwise fall short. There is no equal in my mind.

I don't know if I've ever read a more compelling and beautiful explanation of theodicy ever, and it is a book that I will need to ponder again and again to mine all the wealth of wisdom found in it!

This book seemed to be written in a bit of a rush in response to the tragedy. As such it's readable, as Hart always is, but doesn't answer the question it asks in the title with any great depth.

This is an important book to read on the subject of evil. The last chapter is a particularly useful and passionate polemic against faulty systems of Christian thought. It is not an easy read though due to the authors penchant for using difficult and obscure words!

David Bentley Hart is unquestionably one of the most brilliant theological and philosophical minds in America today. This is a fine introduction into his thought through the medium of an important topic.The purpose for writing this book was to expand the thoughts of a NY Times article that Hart was asked by a friend to write following the tragedy of the 2004 Christmas Tsunami. The monstrous event was followed by hasty responses from people of various philosophical and religious traditions. From one perspective, some atheists wrote that this was clear evidence that God does not exist, as though the multitudes of religious believers worldwide had never considered the gravity of evil in the world, and the implications for such a reality on their belief. From another perspective, some theologians were claiming that God predestined such a catastrophe and that the piles of infant and children bodies were somehow a testimony to God's sovereignty and glory. In light of these seemingly polar opposite arguments (despite their similar theological view of god), Hart responds by expounding on the Christian intellectual tradition against these two opposing views. Hart clearly reserves his greatest criticism for those theologians who distort the Christian tradition to portray God as not subversively working against such tragedy, but willing and using such tragedies.Hart discusses Voltaire's response to the Lisbon earthquake (a similarly tragic event), positioning it within its historical context, highlighting Voltaire's disdain for the typical theological answers offered to him by those who had a heightened sense of theological optimism and claimed that every evil had a good purpose. Hart then discusses how the god who wills and has a purpose in such tragedies must also be rejected, if not through denying his existence, at least in by denying him allegiance. Hart builds this argument through the thought of Fyodor Dostoevsky (particularly through the words of Ivan Karamazov in The Brothers Karamazov). Few would disagree that the words of Ivan Karamazov present the problem of evil as well as anyone before or since. I would disagree, and whereas I accept that reading Hart may require keeping a dictionary at hand, such a challenge should not dissuade the reader from finishing the work and pondering his argument.Unfortunately, the brevity of this work also means that not all questions about the theological aspects of Hart's argument can be resolved. As such, I would suggest the theological reader also read Hart's The Beauty Of The Infinite: The Aesthetics Of Christian Truth.I would also suggest that the reader have a basic understanding of philosophy and theology before reading the book. The terminology may be unfamiliar to some who are not familiar with these fields and thus they would find the reading more difficult than it is intended to be. This would not diminish my willingness to suggest the book to those thinking through this issue. Few authors have made such a compelling case in such a succinct and beautiful manner.

About the Author

Terence Wade (1930–2005) was Professor Emeritus and Research Fellow in Russian Studies at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. He wrote 12 books, including Prepositions in Modern Russian (1985), Russian Etymological Dictionary (1996), The Russian Language Today (with Larissa Ryazanova-Clarke, 1999), and A Comprehensive Russian Grammar, third edition (revised by David Gillespie, Wiley-Blackwell, 2010).

David Gillespie is Professor of Russian at the University of Bath, UK, where he has taught Russian language and culture since 1985. He is the author of 8 books and more than 50 papers on modern Russian literature and film.

About the Author

S. Yizhar was the pen name of Yizhar Smilansky, born in Rehovot in 1916. A longtime member of the Knesset, he is most famous as the author of Khirbet Khizeh and the untranslated magnum opus Days of Ziklag. He died in 2006. Nicholas de Lange, a professor emeritus of Hebrew and Jewish studies at Cambridge University, has translated many Hebrew novels, including Preliminaries by S. Yizhar (2007). Yaacob Dweck translated Haim Sabato's The Dawning of the Day (2006). He is an assistant professor of history and Judaic studies at Princeton University. David Shulman teaches Sanskrit and other Indian languages at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has published numerous books and is the author of Dark Hope: Working for Peace in Israel and Palestine (2007). Shulman was named a MacArthur Fellow in 1987.

The story of the exile of the Palestinians from their lands in the first of Israel's wars - a process that is ongoing - and a portrayal of ongoing human indifference to the plight of others continues to resonate. It's unfortunate that all the extraordinary flexibility of English cannot duplicate the power of the original Hebrew; its allusions to biblical texts are barely shadowed in translation. When Moshe and Shlomo - Moses and Saul - begin to argue, readers get some hint of what may be going on in the original language - an argument that transcends time, tradition, the particular circumstances of a single - and singular - war.

This novel is written in a simple, hauntingly beautiful style and describes one Israeli soldiers misgivings as his unit helps to displace Palestinians from their native village, during the early days of the State of Israel. However, there is nothng simple in the emotions that this story evokes in the reader, who can't help but sympathize with the protagonist's feelings of isolation and despair at the role he feels compelled to play, sending villagers into exile.

I am probably the one to blame for this not getting five stars. I just couldn't stomach some of the graphic content. I've never served in a military and reading something like this is such a touching and humanist viewpoint. I would recommend this book for a quick read that feels like you're reading about a lifetime.

An anguished recollection of the sins of how he treated the Arabs at Khirbet Khizehj

Rings true and provides a beautifully written account of a certain experience. Painful to read but, like all good literature, makes the reader both care and understand.

Very well written. The author saw the future events years before they took place.

Interesting book. War from a thoughtful perspective.

This book is a fine description of the problems dealing with relations between Israelis and Arabs shortly after the establishment of the state of Israel.

Since this book is a required text for a college course, the review can be limited. It is a little outdated since the laws and way things are done have changed since print in 2008. If not needed for college course- try to find something more updated. Author is very good and book is easy to follow with practice test and answers. I gave it 5 stars because it delivers what it is, a 2008 print book. I think it would be unfair to try and downgrade it because it is not have a later print. It fulfills for what it is for the time it was written for.

Not bad for reading material.

Its a text book for college courses. If you think it is going to be anything other than that you are confused. It will help you pass a state realtor's exam but there are probably better ways to prepare.I got this book because it was required for a course I was taking.

I ordered this book for my real estate course and nobody can tell me what happen I never received the book that status never changed from October 2013 the status still says shipped. Now where this book is I don't know, It never made it to my address I highly doubt anyone knows what happen to it but all I know is that I will not be doing business with this "company" again

I didn`t order this book from Amazon, only from Tech Bookstore, but Amazon took my money and sent me another one, so now I have troubles to return it. What kind of service is it?

This is a college level textbook for complete beginners in the field of Real Estate and specifically Real Estate Appraisal. As such, it gives a nice overview of the profession and of appraisal techniques and not a whole lot more. To get more in depth to the level of feeling professionally competent, you will need to add on with other books and classes. But this is a very good start.
